If you own an RV or Motorhome, you know the glass on your windshield is different from the glass on your other vehicles. Although the size is not the same, it is just as susceptible to chips and cracks. Depending on the severity of the damage, RV auto glass can be repaired just like the glass on your car.

There are different types of glass used on an RV. Depending on the type of glass our vehicle has, some can be repaired and some cannot. The two types of glass installed on an RV are tempered glass and laminated glass.

Laminated Glass

Laminated glass is created when two pieces of annealed glass are pressed together using polyvinyl butyral, also known as PVB. When this glass is impacted, it breaks and chips like normal glass. The PVB in the center of the two pieces is what keeps the broken pieces in place. This is a safety feature that works during a crash or impact to your windshield, keeping you and those inside your RV safe. This type of glass is commonly used on RVs and is an approved glass product by the Department of Transportation.

Tempered Glass

Glass is tempered using a process that heats and cools the glass rapidly. When glass is cooled at a rapid speed, it creates a high surface tension, creating a stronger barrier between you and the road. We highly recommend this type of glass for the side windows of your RV due to the strength and durability. This type of glass shatters when enough force impacts it. In some accident situations, these windows are easily broken so that you have a way out of your vehicle if the doors do not open. This type of glass will more likely be a replacement than a repair depending on the incident.

Based on the differences between these two types of glass, it is obvious why laminated glass is your best choice for your RV windshield. You want your windshield to stay intact when hit with debris or impacted by another vehicle. Chips and cracks can also be repaired, saving you the expense of a full replacement.

Benefits of RV and Motorhome Glass Repair

The larger the windshield, the more expensive it is to replace. When you compare the cost of a repair compared to the cost of a replacement, you are looking at the difference between hundreds and thousands of dollars. We want to save you money and perform repairs so you don't have to pay for a full replacement. The best way to do this is to bring your RV in as soon as it is damaged. The longer you wait, the worse the damage will get. In many cases, we can have the glass repaired the same day you bring it in.

Glass Repair Process

Our technicians specialize in auto glass for cars, trucks, RVs and motorhomes. We even offer a mobile service if it is not safe for you to drive to one of our locations due to glass damage. It is also convenient for servicing large vehicles like RVs due to the space needed to park them. We begin by evaluating the damage and pinpointing each crack or ship on the windshield. Using special tools, we can insert resin into the cracks and chips, filling the gap and keeping it from spreading. A UV light is used to cure the resin, creating a hard bond to the glass. We finish by using an effective, high-quality cleaner over the glass.

Although there is a lot we can do to repair damage, there are limitations to what we can do. If the damage is too extensive, we will recommend a replacement. It would be irresponsible of us to do a repair knowing it will not hold and create an inevitable safety issue while you are on the road. Once we have your RV inspected, we can determine the structural integrity of the glass and make the best call on what to do.

There are certain signs that your RV cracks and chips may be beyond repair, which are best determined by one of our technicians. These include:
  • The size of the rock chip
  • The length of a crack
  • Cracks that extend between two edges of the glass
  • PVB layer damage
  • Location of the damage with respect to the primary view of the driver
  • Relation of damage to windshield wipers

Additional RV Glass Repair

If the additional glass on your RV or motorhome is laminated glass, chips and cracks can be repaired using the same methods we use on windshields. This includes your door windows, side windows, rear windows, and sunroof windows. If the glass used on these locations is laminated glass, they will most likely need to be replaced for the reasons we mentioned previously when discussing laminated glass.

Window Frames

We consider all aspects of your auto glass, including the window frames. Sometimes the solution to your glass issue is the frame itself. We can inspect the frame for possible leaks or gaps. Depending on the issue, we can re-caulk or re-seal the frame to the window, fixing the seal.

Choose Our Experts

When it comes to replacing a motorhome windshield or side window - you don't want just anyone doing the installation. RV windows are very complicated, are heavy and large, and need to be done properly - and if they are not installed properly it can cause serious damage.

Precision Auto Glass has over 15 years of experience working on RV windows. We have the experience and the proper tools to get the job done right. Further, we are a trusted and preferred glass provider for many RV companies, and almost all insurance companies, around the state of Utah and western United States.
